(ex)tension explores new possibilities of rhythm generation through an instrument conceived in direct contact with space.

The work positions itself within the discourse on the relationship between human and machine, drawing from Marshall McLuhan’s media theory that understands technology as an extension of the body.

A new kind of surround instrument was developed for this purpose, dedicated to the materials wood, aluminium and ceramics. Its structure translates the principles of the Euclidean rhythm, as formulated by Godfried Toussaint, into spatial and acoustic form. Through this transposition, (ex)tension investigates how rhythm can unfold as geometry in motion, a tactile dialogue between form, sound and the environment that contains it.
